Oct 6, 2003. #2. My 74 manual said to use non deturgent 50 weight motor oil. I use synthetic 90 weight gear oil it is lighter than 50 weight motor oil and gives the protection of 90 weight. It is uneffected by water if you should go so deep. It also makes shifting the transfer case slightly easier.
