I sectioned them up and got 4 sections of 23 inch boards. I set my table saw to 1/4 inch and shaved them down on both sides to yield. 3x1.5x23 sections. Thinking this would "plane" my sections and yield perfectly straight edges., Of course the practical method to calculate the max load is to get some weights and load up a unit until it fails, and then see how much it took before it broke. ... All 2x4s are not made uniformly. Some have knots which make them very weak. If the load is applied on one 2x4 beam, this shelf is very weak. The plywood distributes the weight., Splicing 2x4s together can help to overcome this problem without sacrificing strength. When done correctly, it is possible to combine two shorter pieces of wood to form a single, seamless length that can meet the needs of the project. Additionally, splicing 2x4s can be less expensive than purchasing longer pieces of wood.
