Edit: though once you do get an exotic to drop you should only get exotics (from the relevant slot for the relevant character) you don't have yet. After you've unlocked them all then it's just luck. I played a master lost sector the other day. Attempted it for about 4 hours until I beat it. It was my first time being able to complete one of these and I was really excited about being able to maybe get dawn chorus to get nothing but 2000 glimmer. I tried it a second time. Still nothing.
